Born out of the strong belief that all women, regardless of where they come from deserve safe and quality healthcare, Ọmụgwọ Maternal Welfare Initiative (OMWI) was created to stand in the gap between women in underserved communities and what they need.
Ọmụgwọ Maternal Welfare Initiative
Our Story
OMWI saw a gap in Nigeria's women's health landscape, as it has an elevated incidence of period poverty and its maternal mortality rate (MMR) is amongst the highest in the world. A few of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in Nigeria are: infection, postpartum hemorrhage, and hypertensive disorder; they are largely treatable and/or preventable. As such, with the appropriate resources and advocacy, OMWI stands to combat these causes and join the fight against a rising MMR.
At OMWI the spirit of the Omugwo is at the heart of our mission, a traditional practice of the Igbo people which involves a mother being mothered in the early postpartum stage by her own mother or a female member of her family. Respecting traditional knowledge and care, OMWI strives to support the omugwo essence through provision of empowering health education and facilitating access to quality healthcare.
Ultimately, with dedication to our vision we strive to achieve health and wellness for all women without borders.
