Maternal Health
Bridging traditional wisdom with evidence-based educational material and workshops to support prenatal and postnatal holistic care.

Our Story
Born out of the strong belief that all women, regardless of where they come from, deserve safe and quality healthcare, Ọmụgwọ Maternal Welfare Initiative (OMWI) was created to stand in the gap between women in underserved communities and the care they need.
OMWI saw a gap in Nigeria’s women’s health landscape. Period poverty is widespread, and the country’s maternal mortality ratio is among the highest in the world. Leading causes of maternal illness and death in Nigeria include infection, postpartum haemorrhage and hypertensive disorders, which are largely preventable or treatable. With the right resources and advocacy, OMWI works to combat these causes and help bring maternal deaths down.
The spirit of ọmụgwọ is at the heart of our mission. Ọmụgwọ is a traditional practice of the Igbo people in which a new mother is herself mothered in the early weeks after birth by her own mother or another woman in her family. Respecting this traditional knowledge and care, OMWI extends the essence of ọmụgwọ through empowering health education and by facilitating access to quality healthcare.
Ultimately, with dedication to our vision we strive to achieve health and wellness for all women without borders.
